DMK working president M.K. Stalin demanded on July 2, 2017, the immediate release of protesting farmers and residents arrested in Kathiramangalam village near Kumbakonam. Stalin urged the state administration to drop all criminal charges filed against villagers who had organized peaceful demonstrations following an oil pipeline leakage that contaminated local agricultural soil and groundwater reserves.
The opposition leader stated that rural residents were legitimately alarmed by recurring leaks from commercial extraction pipelines, which posed severe health risks and ruined fertile agrarian land. Instead of addressing the villagers' genuine environmental concerns and securing their safety, the state police resorted to forceful crackdowns, lathi charges, and arbitrary arrests. Stalin emphasized that treating peaceful citizens and cultivators like criminals for defending their land and drinking water was completely unacceptable in a democracy.
Stalin urged the government to hold transparent discussions with the residents and review extractive operations across the Cauvery delta region. He affirmed that the DMK stands solidly behind the people of Kathiramangalam and will continue to challenge administrative repression through legal and political channels. The state must prioritize environmental safety over commercial extraction.
