DMK working president M.K. Stalin criticized the ruling AIADMK government on July 4, 2017, for sheer administrative incompetence regarding the Mekedatu dam controversy. Stalin asserted that the state government's failure to secure a Supreme Court stay against Karnataka's planned reservoir exposed its complete inability to defend Tamil Nadu's agricultural interests and riparian rights. The project threatened the primary irrigation supply for millions of delta cultivators.
The opposition leader pointed out that Karnataka was proceeding with detailed project planning and preliminary works across the Cauvery basin in violation of tribunal awards. Despite repeated warnings from opposition parties and farmer associations, the state administration failed to mount a decisive legal challenge or obtain an injunction in the apex court. Stalin stressed that allowing Karnataka to proceed unchecked would permanently devastate the agrarian economy of the Cauvery delta districts.
Stalin demanded that the state government mobilize senior legal counsel and seek an urgent hearing before the Supreme Court to halt all construction activities at Mekedatu. He reaffirmed that the DMK would remain at the forefront of safeguarding Tamil Nadu's rightful share of river waters.
