DMK working president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the AIADMK administration on July 4, 2017, for exhibiting blatant double standards regarding farmers' welfare and state water rights. Stalin criticized the state government for rushing to the Supreme Court to secure a stay against the Madras High Court order that had directed a universal waiver of cooperative farm loans, while failing to obtain an injunction against Karnataka's contentious Mekedatu balancing reservoir project.
The opposition leader stated that the government acted with swift judicial aggression when it came to denying financial relief to drought-hit farmers, but displayed utter negligence when Karnataka initiated construction activity on the Cauvery river. The proposed Mekedatu dam threatened to choke the flow of Cauvery waters into Tamil Nadu, jeopardizing agricultural survival across the fertile delta districts. Stalin emphasized that failing to secure a judicial stay compromised the state's vital riparian rights.
Stalin urged the administration to rectify its anti-farmer stance immediately by pursuing robust legal challenges against Karnataka's unilateral dam project. He demanded that the government drop its opposition to universal loan waivers and prioritize the survival of the farming community above all else.
