DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a strong condemnation on July 7, 2017, against gubernatorial overreach in non-BJP ruled states and Union Territories. Stalin characterized the functioning of Raj Bhavans as parallel administrative centers as thoroughly reprehensible. He specifically criticized nominated Governors and Lieutenant Governors for directly obstructing the routine functioning of elected governments in Puducherry, West Bengal, and Delhi.
The opposition leader stated that parliamentary democracy rests upon the constitutional supremacy of elected representatives who derive their mandate directly from the people. When nominated gubernatorial authorities convene independent administrative reviews, summon department heads, and countermand cabinet decisions, they subvert the democratic will of citizens. Stalin argued that such actions create administrative deadlock, undermine governance, and reduce elected ministries to powerless spectators.
Stalin affirmed that the DMK stands in firm solidarity with state governments resisting central interference through gubernatorial channels. He demanded that Union authorities restrain appointed Governors from exceeding their defined constitutional roles. Preserving democratic norms and regional autonomy requires halting unconstitutional interference across all regional administrations immediately. He reiterated that the DMK will actively mobilize political and legal resistance to safeguard the constitutional autonomy of elected state administrations.
