Unconstitutional interference by Centre through nominated Governors mocks at the idea of Federalism on which India is built.
DMK working president M.K. Stalin voiced sharp criticism on July 7, 2017, against the central government for using gubernatorial offices to interfere in state governance. Stalin asserted that unconstitutional interventions by the Union government through nominated Governors directly mock the foundational concept of federalism upon which the Indian republic was established. He warned that undermining elected state governments degrades constitutional democracy.
The opposition leader stressed that Governors occupy titular, non-partisan constitutional positions intended to safeguard constitutional norms rather than function as political agents of the central ruling party. Bypassing state cabinets, issuing direct directives to bureaucrats, or stalling legislative measures violates constitutional conventions and diminishes the mandate of elected representatives. Stalin observed that centralizing authority through Raj Bhavans undermines the autonomy guaranteed to states under the Constitution.
Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently defend state autonomy and federal rights against central encroachment. He urged democratic forces across the country to resist institutional overreach and protect the constitutional balance between the Union and the states. Strong states remain indispensable for maintaining national unity and democratic equilibrium. He reiterated that the DMK will continue building nationwide consensus to protect the rights of non-BJP ruled states.
