DMK working president M.K. Stalin strongly criticized Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on July 7, 2017, for claiming that the statewide Jallikattu demonstrations had been dispersed peacefully. Stalin pointed out that the administration conveniently ignored documented instances of police brutality, including visual evidence of police personnel setting auto-rickshaws on fire during the crackdown. He argued that whitewashing these documented incidents undermined public confidence in law enforcement and denied justice to peaceful demonstrators.
The opposition leader stated that thousands of students, youth, and citizens had gathered peacefully across Marina Beach and other districts to defend Tamil cultural identity. Instead of addressing public sentiment transparently, the government deployed aggressive force in the closing stages of the agitation. Stalin emphasized that videos and eyewitness accounts of police destroying civilian property contradicted official narratives of restraint.
Stalin demanded executive accountability for the high-handed police actions. He urged the state administration to acknowledge the excesses and initiate impartial inquiries against culpable officers. The DMK reaffirmed its commitment to standing with youth and citizens who mobilized peacefully for their democratic rights. He warned that shielding guilty personnel would only deepen public distrust in governance.
