Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a passionate condemnation on July 7, 2017, against the state government's heavy-handed police repression of peaceful public demonstrations. Stalin questioned whether unleashing indiscriminate lathi charges on ordinary citizens, mothers, and elderly villagers and trampling upon basic human rights constituted the AIADMK administration's definition of democratic law and order. The remarks highlighted recurring incidents of state-sponsored police excess against communities protesting civic grievances.

The opposition leader underscored that citizens across Tamil Nadu were forced to demonstrate on streets only because legitimate administrative channels and grievance redressal mechanisms had broken down completely. Whether women demanding the closure of state-run liquor outlets near schools, villagers protesting oil spills in delta farmlands, or youths defending local water bodies, the government's uniform response was ruthless physical force. Stalin pointed out that brutalizing unarmed women and peaceful demonstrators demonstrated extreme administrative cowardice and violated constitutional guarantees of free speech and peaceful assembly.

Stalin demanded an immediate halt to police violence, impartial inquiries into instances of excess, and strict accountability for officers who transgressed legal limits. He reiterated that the DMK will fearlessly protect the democratic right to protest and champion human dignity across the state.
