DMK working president M.K. Stalin delivered a scathing critique of the state government on July 7, 2017, ridiculing ministers who repeatedly boasted that Tamil Nadu remained a peaceful garden under AIADMK rule. Stalin compared these complacent ministerial assertions to the infamous historical legend of Roman Emperor Nero playing his fiddle while Rome burned to ashes around him, emphasizing that the regime remained blissfully oblivious to escalating social unrest and civic distress.
The opposition leader pointed out that far from being tranquil, Tamil Nadu was witnessing unprecedented public protests across towns and villages on a daily basis. Distressed farmers, struggling weavers, college students, government employees, and women were taking to the streets to demand drought relief, employment opportunities, and protection from environmentally ruinous extraction projects. Instead of acknowledging the widespread public anguish and initiating empathetic dialogue, the state government responded with severe police crackdowns, preventive arrests, and hollow self-congratulatory speeches.
Stalin emphasized that genuine peace arises from good governance, social justice, and citizen satisfaction rather than repressive police force. He called upon the state administration to abandon its delusional propaganda and address pressing public crises. The DMK reaffirmed its commitment to standing with protesting citizens to hold the government accountable.
