DMK working president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the Union government on July 8, 2017, for attempting to merge the autonomous Central Institute of Classical Tamil into the Central University of Tamil Nadu in Tiruvarur. Stalin characterized the proposed relocation as a calculated administrative ploy to strip the premier research institution of its independent status, diminish its academic stature, and dilute financial allocations dedicated to Classical Tamil research.
The opposition leader recalled that the institute had been established in Chennai as an autonomous national body through the tireless efforts of former Chief Minister Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi following the historic recognition of Tamil as a Classical Language in 2004. Downgrading an independent national center into a mere university department would curtail its global research scope and subordinate linguistic scholarship to central bureaucratic control. Stalin criticized the state government for remaining a passive spectator while an institution symbolizing Tamil scholarship was systematically dismantled.
Stalin demanded that the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development immediately withdraw the merger proposal and allocate necessary funds to expand the institute's research infrastructure in Chennai. He affirmed that the DMK will fiercely oppose any effort to undermine the autonomous stature of Classical Tamil institutions.
