Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a stern warning to the Union government on July 8, 2017, cautioning that aggressive attempts to impose Hindi across non-Hindi-speaking states would ignite fierce democratic resistance. Comparing the central administration's relentless language policies to an uncontrolled rogue elephant running amok, Stalin declared that any deliberate moves to undermine the dignity, status, and institutional autonomy of Classical Tamil would result in grave political consequences for the ruling BJP.

The opposition leader underscored that Tamil Nadu possessed a proud, heroic history of leading anti-Hindi imposition struggles to defend linguistic self-respect and cultural heritage. From administrative signage to central entrance examinations and educational curriculum revisions, the Union government was systematically promoting Hindi while marginalizing rich regional languages. Stalin pointed out that India's unity relies fundamentally on celebrating linguistic diversity and respecting constitutional equality among all national languages rather than enforcing cultural and linguistic uniformity from New Delhi.

Stalin called upon the central authorities to immediately abandon their discriminatory linguistic policies and treat all scheduled languages with equal dignity. He affirmed that the DMK will always stand on the frontline to protect Tamil identity and constitutional language rights. The statement rallied public sentiment against central cultural homogenization.
