DMK working president M.K. Stalin demanded on July 9, 2017, that both the central and state governments initiate decisive diplomatic and political interventions to compel the Sri Lankan government to repeal its oppressive fisheries law. Stalin emphasized that the contentious statute, which imposed astronomical financial penalties and vehicle seizures on cross-border fishermen, was a deliberate economic onslaught aimed at extinguishing the livelihoods of tens of thousands of Tamil Nadu fishing households.
The opposition leader pointed out that while coastal families lived under constant threat of mid-sea harassment, arrests, and gunfire by the Sri Lankan Navy, the Union government maintained an ineffective and accommodating diplomatic posture. Similarly, the state government failed to assertively demand central protective action, leaving vulnerable fishermen to their fate. Stalin noted that bilateral agreements and historical boundary settlements could not be allowed to strip Indian citizens of their traditional sustenance without strong counter-measures from New Delhi.
Stalin insisted that the Prime Minister take up the matter directly with the Sri Lankan leadership to secure the law's repeal and guarantee fishing safety in Palk Bay. He called for comprehensive compensation packages for affected vessel owners. The DMK pledged to stand in steadfast solidarity with Tamil Nadu's seafaring communities.
