DMK working president and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin intervened inside the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on July 11, 2017, demanding that the state government immediately drop all criminal charges and release detained villagers from Kathiramangalam. Stalin highlighted that rural residents, including elderly farmers and women, had been subjected to brutal police violence and arbitrary arrests for peacefully expressing legitimate alarm over ONGC crude oil pipeline leakages polluting their agricultural fields.
The opposition leader emphasized that villagers were exercising their fundamental right to protect their drinking water sources, fertile topsoil, and community health. Instead of sending senior administrators to remediate the industrial contamination and allay genuine public fears, the state government deployed hundreds of armed police personnel to unleash lathi charges and arrest innocent cultivators under non-bailable sections. Stalin stated that suppressing frightened village residents while shielding corporate oil entities constituted an intolerable failure of governance and civil liberties.
Stalin demanded that the Chief Minister take immediate steps to restore normalcy in the village, revoke criminal proceedings, and ensure medical and environmental rehabilitation. He reiterated that the DMK will firmly defend the rights of agrarian communities against heavy-handed police repression across the state.
