Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the central BJP government on July 12, 2017, for attempting to institute a centralized All India Judicial Service examination for recruiting subordinate judges. Stalin warned that just as the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test had dismantled state control over medical admissions, introducing a uniform central test for judicial appointments would systematically erode state autonomy and undermine the federal character of the Indian judiciary.

The opposition leader underscored that subordinate judiciary appointments require intimate knowledge of local languages, regional customs, state legislation, and grassroots socioeconomic realities. Centralizing judicial recruitment through a standardized national exam would severely disadvantage regional language candidates, erode local social justice reservations, and disrupt the constitutional prerogative of state high courts and state public service commissions. Stalin pointed out that this relentless centralization was part of an authoritarian agenda to concentrate all institutional power in New Delhi, weakening regional self-governance.

Stalin called upon all non-BJP state governments and regional parties to unite against this federal assault. He asserted that judicial appointments must remain decentralised to preserve diverse linguistic representation and protect federal democracy. The DMK pledged to fight against centralizing entrance models across all institutional sectors.
