Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin came out strongly on July 16, 2017, in defense of celebrated actor Kamal Haasan after several state ministers unleashed vitriolic attacks and intimidation against him for speaking out on pervasive corruption in Tamil Nadu. Stalin declared that Kamal Haasan's outspoken critique of governmental bribery and administrative decay was not an isolated opinion, but accurately mirrored the deep anger and frustration of millions of ordinary citizens across the state.

The opposition leader condemned cabinet ministers for issuing veiled legal threats and demanding proof from a prominent citizen who simply echoed widespread public experience. Stalin pointed out that corruption in government departments—from municipal approvals to teacher recruitments and public procurement—was palpable throughout daily life. Attempting to gag public personalities and intimidate cultural figures who speak truth to power exposed the ruling regime's despotic intolerance and moral cowardice.

Stalin reaffirmed that every citizen in a democracy enjoys the constitutional right to question governmental malpractice without fear of state reprisal. He warned ministers to desist from bullying critics and focus instead on curbing systemic extortion within their portfolios. The DMK pledged its steadfast support for freedom of speech and citizen advocacy against corruption across Tamil Nadu.
