DMK working president M.K. Stalin visited the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital in Chennai on the evening of July 16, 2017, to meet individuals injured in the massive fire at Kodungaiyur. Stalin spent time with the hospitalized victims and their families, inquiring about their clinical condition and expressing deep personal empathy and solidarity. He met the attending doctors to review the ongoing specialized care and urged the medical team to ensure comprehensive treatment.
The tragedy occurred when an explosion erupted during a fire at a scrap warehouse in Kodungaiyur, claiming the life of a brave firefighter and causing severe burns to numerous local residents and emergency responders. Stalin condemned the administrative delays in managing hazardous materials and clearing unlicensed chemical godowns situated close to residential zones. He demanded that the state government sanction immediate ex-gratia compensation and guaranteed medical assistance to all injured victims and ensure dignified relief to the bereaved firefighter's family.
Stalin reiterated that urban administrations must eliminate hazardous industrial installations from densely populated neighborhoods to avert recurring disasters. He assured the affected families of DMK's enduring support throughout their rehabilitation. The visit demonstrated Stalin's compassionate on-ground engagement with vulnerable citizens during civic crises.
