Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin condemned both the central and state governments on July 18, 2017, accusing them of colluding in an unpardonable betrayal of Tamil Nadu's students by withholding presidential assent for two crucial bills exempting the state from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test. Stalin stated that both bills had been unanimously passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in February 2017, yet remained deliberately suppressed without executive action in New Delhi.

The opposition leader underscored that the unanimous passage of legislation by an elected state assembly reflects the sovereign constitutional will of eight crore people. Allowing central ministries to sit indefinitely on regional legislative measures without explanation constituted a direct assault on the federal structure of the Indian Constitution. The state government's meek refusal to confront central authorities or initiate urgent constitutional litigation proved their total subordination to the central ruling party at the expense of student futures.

Stalin declared that the DMK would never permit the dilution of Tamil Nadu's medical education rights. He demanded that the Union government immediately grant presidential assent to restore certainty for aspiring doctors. The DMK pledged to intensify democratic protests until legislative autonomy is fully vindicated.
