DMK working president M.K. Stalin challenged the ruling AIADMK on July 18, 2017, demanding to know whether the party possessed the political will to condition its support for the BJP's Vice-Presidential candidate on securing presidential assent for Tamil Nadu's NEET exemption bills. Stalin noted that while the central government required parliamentary votes from regional parties, the state administration failed to utilize this crucial political leverage to protect Tamil Nadu's medical aspirants.
The opposition leader pointed out that the Tamil Nadu Assembly had unanimously passed two crucial bills to exempt state students from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test. However, both legislative enactments remained stalled in New Delhi without presidential sanction for months. Instead of using valuable electoral votes during high-stakes national elections to demand swift constitutional clearance, AIADMK leaders offered unconditional backing to central rulers merely to safeguard their fragile ministerial berths.
Stalin insisted that genuine regional leadership demands leveraging political strength fearlessly to defend state entitlements. He called upon the state government to place public welfare above narrow political survival. The DMK reaffirmed that it would continue mobilizing political and civic pressure until permanent exemption from NEET is secured for Tamil Nadu.
