DMK working president M.K. Stalin marked a historic milestone inside the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on July 18, 2017, by proudly recording the Golden Jubilee of the historic legislative resolution that officially renamed Madras State as Tamil Nadu. Stalin recalled that on July 18, 1967, visionary Dravidian Chief Minister Perarignar C.N. Annadurai fulfilled the historic aspirations of millions by giving the ancient Tamil homeland its rightful constitutional identity.

The opposition leader underscored that the name change represented far more than a geographical relabeling; it symbolized the political resurgence, cultural self-respect, and linguistic pride of the Tamil people. He paid homage to language martyrs, particularly Sankaralinganar who sacrificed his life through an extended hunger strike demanding the state's renaming. Stalin highlighted that Anna's landmark legislative achievement firmly anchored Dravidian self-determination and regional self-assertion within the framework of Indian constitutional federalism.

Stalin called upon all legislators and citizens to honor this legacy by defending state autonomy, cultural identity, and linguistic rights with unflagging dedication. He emphasized that celebrating fifty years of Tamil Nadu's official name should inspire future generations to uphold regional dignity against centralizing tendencies.
