DMK working president M.K. Stalin demanded on July 18, 2017, that the AIADMK administration immediately drop all criminal charges and release detained civil rights and environmental activists, including student Valarmathi, May 17 Movement coordinator Thirumurugan Gandhi, and anti-hydrocarbon campaigner Professor Jayaraman. Stalin stated that the punitive detention of civic campaigners exercising constitutional rights to peaceful protest exposed the authoritarian mindset of the ruling dispensation.
The opposition leader underscored that these individuals were jailed solely for articulating public concerns regarding agrarian environmental degradation, state autonomy, and democratic freedoms. Clamping preventive detention laws like the Goondas Act on students and academic activists campaigning against environmentally hazardous projects in the Cauvery delta demonstrated administrative vindictiveness. Stalin pointed out that treating democratic dissent as a law-and-order threat eroded democratic norms and violated fundamental guarantees enshrined in the Constitution.
Stalin insisted that a civilized democracy must accommodate peaceful public disagreement rather than locking up civic campaigners through police coercion. He called upon the government to act responsibly, withdraw fabricated charges, and release all detained activists without condition. The DMK reaffirmed its unwavering solidarity with civil society groups defending public rights and democratic speech across Tamil Nadu.
