DMK working president and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin delivered a comprehensive appraisal on July 19, 2017, at the conclusion of the twenty-day Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly session. Stalin lamented that despite extensive legislative debates and constructive interventions by opposition members, the state government failed to take decisive steps to resolve urgent public problems, leaving behind pervasive administrative emptiness and acute disappointment among citizens across the state.
The opposition leader pointed out that critical challenges facing Tamil Nadu—including historic agrarian drought, severe drinking water shortages, rural farmer suicides, fiscal deficits, and mounting youth unemployment—were treated with bureaucratic indifference by treasury benches. Rather than announcing substantive policy measures or relief allocations, ruling ministers spent legislative time praising party leadership and deflecting questions on corruption scandals. Stalin observed that the assembly session had been reduced to a ceremonial exercise while governance remained paralyzed statewide.
Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK fulfilled its democratic responsibility as an active, vigilant opposition by championing public grievances on the floor of the House. He vowed that the party would continue taking these unresolved issues directly to the people through grassroots mobilizations to demand accountability from the government.
