DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a severe condemnation on July 19, 2017, against the state government's alarming practice of invoking the draconian Goondas Act against social activists, students, and citizens protesting environmentally destructive projects. Stalin warned that using preventive detention statutes designed for hardened criminals against peaceful dissenters who criticize central BJP policies or state development schemes represented an intolerable assault on democratic freedoms.
The opposition leader noted that civic activists and youth leaders opposing hydrocarbon extraction, petrochemical corridors, and agrarian degradation were exercising their constitutional right to peaceful assembly and free speech. Instead of addressing substantive environmental risks or engaging in constructive dialogue with affected farming communities, the state administration deployed repressive police powers to silence legitimate dissent and appease central authorities. Stalin emphasized that criminalizing civic protests transforms democratic governance into police-state authoritarianism.
Stalin demanded the immediate withdrawal of preventive detention charges and unconditional release of incarcerated activists. He asserted that no democratic government can crush popular concern for ecological preservation through administrative coercion. The DMK pledged its steadfast legal and political support to defend civil liberties, constitutional rights, and environmental defenders across Tamil Nadu.
