DMK working president M.K. Stalin raised incisive questions regarding police integrity inside the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on July 19, 2017. Responding to ministerial remarks urging opposition members to surrender evidence of contraband trade to local police stations, Stalin asked how legislators or citizens could entrust seized contraband to a department whose top officers were documented as receiving massive illicit payouts from gutkha manufacturers.
The opposition leader underscored that the DMK had displayed packets of banned tobacco products inside the assembly specifically to expose their rampant, open availability throughout Chennai markets despite official prohibitions. When Income Tax investigation ledgers showed that senior police commissioners and department chiefs received regular bribes to facilitate illicit distribution, expecting local stations to act impartially was absurd. Stalin pointed out that systemic complicity at the top disarmed honest ground-level officers and protected organized smuggling networks.
Stalin asserted that the duty of an opposition leader is to confront executive delinquency fearlessly on behalf of public welfare. He reiterated that protecting public health from toxic substances requires cleansing police leadership rather than deflecting responsibility onto whistleblowers. The DMK vowed to persist in demanding comprehensive judicial accountability for contaminated law enforcement administration.
