DMK working president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the state administration on July 23, 2017, for clearing a controversial Petroleum, Chemicals and Petrochemical Investment Region across forty-five fertile villages. Stalin remarked that the swift clearance demonstrated how the ruling AIADMK acted with total subservience, complying instantly whenever the central BJP government issued instructions. The decision ignored local community resistance and threatened extensive agrarian ecosystems in the coastal and delta regions.
The opposition leader highlighted that converting fertile agricultural land and water recharge belts into hazardous chemical processing zones poses permanent ecological dangers. Farming communities and coastal populations faced displacement, soil degradation, and groundwater contamination from toxic industrial effluents. Instead of protecting rural livelihoods and agricultural security, the state government rubber-stamped central industrial proposals without conducting transparent public hearings or environmental assessments in affected hamlets.
Stalin demanded the immediate cancellation of the petrochemical project notifications to safeguard rural farmlands and fragile coastal habitats. He asserted that industrial expansion should never destroy fundamental agrarian livelihoods or degrade irreplaceable natural environments. The DMK leader reaffirmed his party's unyielding commitment to standing alongside local farmers and rural communities against destructive industrial corridors imposed without public consultation or local consent.
