DMK working president M.K. Stalin expressed profound anguish on July 23, 2017, over the central leadership's distorted priorities in New Delhi. Stalin condemned Prime Minister Narendra Modi for granting repeated audiences to Tamil Nadu ministers facing grave corruption allegations while stubbornly refusing to meet distressed farmers demonstrating at Jantar Mantar for months. He pointed out that this indifference displayed callous disregard for rural agrarian suffering.
The opposition leader highlighted that Tamil Nadu farmers had suffered the worst drought in over a century, suffering extensive crop failures, mounting debt burdens, and acute economic distress. Despite undertaking dramatic and desperate forms of protest in the national capital to demand drought relief packages, loan waivers, and river interlinking, the protesting cultivators were denied a hearing by the Union government. Meanwhile, state ministers embroiled in factional infighting received immediate access for political negotiations.
Stalin insisted that genuine democratic governance must prioritize agrarian producers over political power brokers. He called upon the Union administration to grant immediate debt relief and address farmers' core demands without delay. The DMK reaffirmed its unwavering solidarity with Tamil Nadu's cultivating community in their struggle for dignity and survival.
