DMK working president M.K. Stalin demanded on July 24, 2017, the immediate dismissal of Director General of Police T.K. Rajendran following widespread allegations linking top police officials to the illegal gutkha distribution racket. Stalin urged the state government to appoint an upright, reputable officer to head the law enforcement apparatus and restore dignity to Tamil Nadu's storied police department.

The opposition leader stated that retaining an official implicated in Income Tax department records regarding bribes paid by banned tobacco manufacturers destroyed public trust in policing.
