Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin criticized Tamil Nadu ministers on July 25, 2017, for prostrating before central BJP leaders to plead for temporary adjustments regarding the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test. Stalin pointed out that begging for ad hoc dispensations directly contradicted the solemn spirit and intent of the two bills unanimously passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly seeking permanent exemption from the exam.

The opposition leader noted that the legislative bills represented the sovereign democratic will of the people of Tamil Nadu and required prompt presidential assent under constitutional provisions. Instead of resolutely demanding that New Delhi respect the legislative consensus, ruling AIADMK ministers reduced themselves to subservient petitioners seeking short-term compromises. This meek posture compromised the institutional stature of the state government and undermined the collective stand established inside the assembly chamber.

Stalin emphasized that genuine leadership demands standing firm on principles rather than capitulating to external political pressure. He urged the state administration to abandon its submissive posture and demand the immediate implementation of the legislative enactments. The DMK reaffirmed its commitment to leading a principled fight to safeguard medical admissions for aspiring state students.
