DMK working president M.K. Stalin visited Kathiramangalam village in Thanjavur district on July 31, 2017, to interact directly with local families protesting against dangerous oil exploration and pipeline leaks by ONGC. Meeting village elders, women, and youth who had maintained an unbroken community vigil for weeks, Stalin listened attentively to their harrowing accounts of groundwater pollution, foul chemical odors, and aggressive police intimidation. He offered total political and moral backing to their grassroots environmental movement.
Stalin pointed out that the Cauvery delta's multi-crop agricultural ecosystem had sustained Tamil civilization for over two millennia. Converting lush paddy fields and perennial watercourses into an industrial extraction zone for fossil fuels threatened food security and rural livelihoods across the entire state. The opposition leader condemned the state government for sending police forces into village streets instead of conducting scientific environmental audits on leaking installations.
The DMK leader demanded that all extraction activities in Kathiramangalam be suspended immediately pending comprehensive public consultations and independent scientific reviews. Stalin reiterated that the DMK would never permit corporate ventures that endanger the livelihoods of farmers and agricultural laborers.
