DMK working president M.K. Stalin visited Tiruchirappalli Central Prison on July 31, 2017, to meet anti-hydrocarbon activist Professor T. Jayaraman and nine other protesters detained under non-bailable charges. The activists had been arrested by state police for leading peaceful village demonstrations against hazardous crude oil pipeline leaks and extraction activities operated by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation in Kathiramangalam. Stalin expressed deep solidarity with the jailed activists and enquired about their health and legal defense.

Stalin condemned the state administration for slapping criminal charges against peaceful citizens defending their agrarian lands, groundwater resources, and environmental safety. Rural communities in the fertile Cauvery delta had witnessed severe groundwater contamination and agricultural damage due to unmonitored commercial pipeline operations. Instead of addressing the villagers' genuine environmental alarms, the government deployed armed police to silence legitimate civic dissent.

The DMK leader demanded the immediate release of all detained protesters and the unconditional withdrawal of police cases registered against Kathiramangalam villagers. Stalin assured that DMK legal teams would provide comprehensive aid, pledging that the party would stand resolutely with agrarian communities fighting for ecological survival.
