DMK working president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the state police on July 31, 2017, for unleashing a brutal lathi-charge against peaceful contractual workers of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation. Stalin stated that hundreds of contract laborers and trade union activists were peacefully demonstrating to demand wage parity, job regularisation, and basic employment security after decades of dedicated service. Instead of facilitating tripartite talks, the AIADMK administration deployed police batons, transforming law enforcement into a coercive executive tool.
Stalin highlighted that NLC contract workers form the backbone of power generation and lignite extraction, working under arduous and hazardous industrial conditions. Denying them fair wages and permanent service while violently suppressing their peaceful assembly revealed the anti-worker mentality of the ruling regime. Injuring defenseless laborers and arresting trade union leaders violated basic labor rights and democratic conventions guaranteed under the Constitution.
The DMK leader demanded the immediate withdrawal of police cases against the striking workers and urged the central and state authorities to fulfill their legitimate regularisation demands. Stalin affirmed that the DMK firmly stands with Neyveli's working class in their righteous struggle for labor rights, wage equality, and human dignity.
