DMK working president M.K. Stalin condemned the central government on August 2, 2017, for blatant partisan bias in deploying tax investigation machinery. Stalin contrasted the high-handed Income Tax raids conducted at the Bengaluru resort hosting Gujarat Congress legislators with the total inertia displayed during the Koovathur horse-trading episode in Tamil Nadu. While central forces were mobilized swiftly to destabilize opposition ranks ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections, the brazen purchase of legislative votes in Tamil Nadu went completely uninvestigated.
Stalin pointed out that during the Koovathur confinement, legislators were visibly held hostage and negotiated multi-crore payoffs to support the government during the assembly floor test. Yet, central enforcement directorates acted as blind spectators. Conversely, opposition representatives seeking refuge from political poaching in Gujarat faced immediate punitive raids. This stark disparity proved that central enforcement served purely partisan political objectives.
The DMK leader demanded that the central government cease debasing constitutional institutions for petty electoral advantage. Stalin asserted that public faith in statutory neutrality can only be restored through impartial and objective enforcement of the law without fear, favour, or political interference from ruling parties.
