DMK working president M.K. Stalin raised sharp questions on August 2, 2017, demanding to know why the central government restrained the Income Tax department from investigating the infamous Koovathur resort scandal. Stalin asked whether the Union BJP government deliberately caged the statutory tax agency like a caged parrot to prevent it from stepping anywhere near Koovathur, where dozens of ruling party legislators were sequestered and offered vast sums of unaccounted cash to secure trust vote support.
Stalin recalled that sting operations and public disclosures by ruling party MLAs had openly exposed massive cash transactions and gold distributions during the resort confinement. Despite undeniable evidence circulating in the public domain, central investigation agencies failed to conduct even preliminary inquiries. Stalin pointed out that such selective inaction proved that investigative agencies were muzzled to protect an unrepresentative state government that danced to New Delhi's political tune.
The DMK leader affirmed that compromising statutory enforcement bodies to preserve an illegitimate regime inflicted severe damage on constitutional morality. Stalin vowed that the truth behind the Koovathur horse-trading would ultimately be unmasked before the courts.
