DMK working president M.K. Stalin made a heartfelt appeal on August 4, 2017, urging distressed Tamil Nadu farmers protesting at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to end their strike and return home safely. Speaking with profound emotional solidarity, Stalin conveyed that the entire Tamil society shared their deep anguish over severe drought devastation, mounting crop losses, and confiscation of farm assets by financial institutions. He emphasized that the precious lives of food producers should not be endangered before indifferent governments.
Stalin noted that despite agriculturalists staging harrowing protests under blistering summer heat and monsoonal downpours for over one hundred days, both the Union and state governments refused to grant an audience or waive agricultural loans. The opposition leader assured farmers that their righteous agitation had successfully pricked the conscience of the nation and exposed the utter callousness of ruling regimes in Chennai and New Delhi.
The DMK leader pledged that the party and its secular alliance would take up their battle across legislative and judicial platforms. Stalin insisted that collective democratic mobilization within Tamil Nadu would achieve the relief that Delhi withheld.
