Condemn the attack on Rahul Gandhi @OfficeOfRG in Gujarat. Democratic rights of a political party cannot be cowed down violence

Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the violent physical attack on Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi's convoy on August 5, 2017, in flood-affected Banaskantha, Gujarat. Stalin stated that stone-pelting at an elected leader visiting distressed citizens was an unacceptable assault on democratic norms. Opposition parties possess an undisputed constitutional right to meet citizens, assess ground realities during natural calamities, and hold ruling dispensations accountable without fearing physical intimidation or orchestrated violence.

Stalin criticized the state administration and local law enforcement for failing to provide adequate security cover to a national opposition leader during an official field visit. Resorting to mob violence against political adversaries reflects desperation and democratic intolerance on the part of ruling establishment backers. Political differences in a constitutional democracy must be contested through public debate, electoral competition, and legislative scrutiny, never through coercive physical assaults.

The DMK leader demanded strict punitive action against the perpetrators and their political instigators. Stalin reiterated that legitimate opposition activities and democratic freedoms cannot be intimidated or silenced through orchestrated political hooliganism, physical intimidation, or partisan violence in any part of India.
