DMK working president M.K. Stalin demanded on August 8, 2017, that Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami immediately sack Health Minister C. Vijayabaskar from the state cabinet. Stalin highlighted that the incumbent health minister was seated atop a mountain of grave corruption allegations, including documented links to the banned gutkha scam and tax evasion probes. Retaining a tainted individual at the helm of vital public healthcare paralyzed administrative oversight while seasonal epidemics afflicted citizens across thirty districts.
Stalin pointed out that Tamil Nadu's renowned public healthcare infrastructure required focused, honest, and dynamic executive leadership. Government hospitals and rural primary health centres faced acute shortages of essential medicines, diagnostic reagents, and paramedical personnel because department leadership remained engrossed in political survival and investigative interrogations. Entrusting public health management to an official facing ongoing scrutiny by tax authorities compromised institutional credibility.
The DMK leader urged the immediate induction of a qualified, uncompromised full-time minister capable of supervising state hospitals effectively. Stalin emphasized that public healthcare is a fundamental constitutional right and public necessity that must never be subordinated to corrupt political patronage or administrative negligence.
