DMK working president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the Sri Lankan Navy on August 9, 2017, for a brutal mid-sea attack on innocent Tamil Nadu fishermen. Stalin characterized the violent assault, in which Sri Lankan naval vessels deliberately rammed traditional mechanized boats and arrested helpless fishermen, as an act of sheer barbarism. Such recurring hostilities along the Palk Strait inflicted severe physical trauma and economic devastation on coastal fishing communities in Pudukkottai, Nagapattinam, and Rameswaram.
Stalin criticized both the Union government and the state administration for their continuous apathy toward protecting Indian citizens at sea. Despite repeated assurances from central authorities, maritime harassment by the Sri Lankan military escalated with total impunity. Sinking fishing vessels, confiscating expensive GPS nets, and subjecting impoverished seafarers to physical assault violated basic international maritime conventions and human rights treaties.
The DMK leader demanded that the Prime Minister and Ministry of External Affairs intervene decisively through diplomatic channels to halt Sri Lankan naval aggression permanently. Stalin reiterated that safeguarding the livelihood and physical security of Tamil Nadu fishermen remains a non-negotiable sovereign responsibility of the Union government.
