DMK working president M.K. Stalin condemned the state government on August 16, 2017, for persistent neglect in preserving Tamil Nadu's historic monuments and traditional archaeological landmarks. Stalin noted with deep anguish that neglect by state agencies was actively causing structural decay and damage to priceless historical heritage. The apathy of the ruling administration compromised centuries of unique civilizational memory, leaving ancient memorials, temple precincts, and heritage precincts unprotected against illegal encroachments and environmental degradation.
Stalin highlighted that Tamil Nadu possesses an unparalleled historical legacy spanning millennia, celebrated worldwide for architectural ingenuity and literary richness. Under DMK administrations guided by Kalaignar Karunanidhi, cultural landmarks, memorial arches, and classical Tamil monuments received meticulous patronship, scientific conservation, and regular upkeep. In sharp contrast, the current dispensation failed even to conduct periodic structural audits or maintain basic perimeter maintenance at prominent heritage destinations across districts.
The DMK leader demanded immediate administrative intervention to restore damaged heritage structures and provide adequate budgetary resources for state archaeological sites. Stalin reiterated that historical heritage defines regional identity and must be safeguarded with unwavering institutional pride and scientific diligence.
