DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a passionate appeal on August 16, 2017, demanding robust state protection for ancient cultural monuments and archaeological treasures across Tamil Nadu. Stalin condemned the ruling AIADMK government for operating with ignorance, apathy, and arrogance while irreplaceable historical landmarks suffered decay and structural desecration. He urged the state archaeology department and police authorities to take swift legal action against vandals and encroachers who deface ancient inscriptions and architectural treasures.
Stalin emphasized that Tamil civilization's glorious artistic heritage, ancient rock-cut temples, stone inscriptions, and historical fortresses represent sacred collective heirlooms. Failing to allocate sufficient conservation funds, deploy security personnel, and maintain heritage perimeters demonstrated total lack of cultural sensitivity. While claiming cultural pride during ceremonial events, the incumbent regime neglected basic ground preservation, allowing centuries-old heritage sites to languish in utter disrepair.
The DMK leader insisted that preserving historical monuments is a fundamental civilizational duty owed to future generations. He called upon the administration to institute modern heritage security systems and enforce strict punitive measures against trespassers. Stalin pledged that a DMK administration would restore and protect Tamil culture.
