DMK working president M.K. Stalin submitted a formal petition to the Governor of Tamil Nadu on August 22, 2017, demanding an immediate floor test in the Legislative Assembly. Stalin urged the gubernatorial office to direct Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to prove his legislative majority without delay. The urgent representation followed written declarations submitted by nineteen ruling party legislators withdrawing their confidence in the incumbent Chief Minister, reducing the administration to an undeniable minority.
Stalin emphasized that democratic conventions and Supreme Court rulings mandate testing legislative strength on the floor of the House. Allowing an unproven administration to continue without legislative legitimacy threatened administrative accountability and public interest across Tamil Nadu. The opposition leader highlighted that governance had ground to a halt while factional horse-trading intensified to artificially preserve political power in Chennai.
The DMK leader affirmed that constitutional propriety must prevail over narrow political expediency. He called upon the Governor to discharge his duties impartially and convene the assembly immediately. Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK coalition would pursue every lawful democratic course to protect constitutional governance and represent the democratic mandate of Tamil Nadu.
