DMK working president M.K. Stalin welcomed the grant of one-month ordinary parole to A.G. Perarivalan on August 24, 2017, noting that it provided much-needed emotional relief to his elderly, ailing parents. Stalin commended the relentless, heroic struggle of Perarivalan mother, Arputham Ammal, who had campaigned tirelessly across three decades for her son freedom. He stated that granting parole after twenty-six long years of imprisonment was a positive humanitarian gesture that should be extended based on medical necessities.
Stalin urged the state government to demonstrate compassion by assessing Perarivalan health conditions and family needs, ensuring that his parole period was extended smoothly without administrative impediments. He pointed out that Perarivalan required specialized medical treatment for chronic ailments developed during prolonged incarceration. In addition, his aging father needed filial support, making continued temporary liberty essential for family well-being and health care.
The DMK leader reiterated that parole was only an initial interim step toward justice. He reaffirmed DMK unyielding demand for the permanent release of all seven Rajiv Gandhi case convicts through executive clemency under the constitutional powers vested in the state.
