DMK working president M.K. Stalin called upon both the Union and Tamil Nadu governments on August 24, 2017, to take decisive steps for the permanent release of A.G. Perarivalan and other long-incarcerated prisoners. Stalin emphasized that Perarivalan had spent over twenty-six years in continuous solitary confinement and prison, far exceeding standard life imprisonment terms. He stated that modern jurisprudence in progressive civilized nations emphasized correctional rehabilitation, humanitarian clemency, and compassion for prisoners who had served protracted sentences with exemplary conduct.
Stalin pointed out that former investigating officers and legal experts had publicly acknowledged irregularities in the initial investigation, reinforcing the compelling moral case for clemency. The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly had already passed unanimous resolutions recommending the premature release of the seven convicts under Article 161 of the Constitution. Continued incarceration despite decades of demonstrated reform reflected administrative vindictiveness rather than the fair pursuit of justice.
The DMK leader urged the state cabinet and Governor to exercise their constitutional powers without further bureaucratic delay. He reaffirmed that the DMK stood resolutely for humane penal administration, prisoner rights, and genuine compassion.
