DMK working president M.K. Stalin demanded on August 25, 2017, that the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly be summoned immediately to conduct a floor test, warning against collusion between the Chief Minister and Assembly Speaker. Stalin pointed out that the Speaker was acting in a partisan manner to shield a minority government that had lost its constitutional mandate. He stated that any attempt by the legislative leadership to delay the confidence vote or disqualify dissenting members violated fundamental principles of democratic fairness.
Stalin highlighted that nineteen ruling party legislators had explicitly declared their loss of confidence in the incumbent Chief Minister before the Governor. Under well-established constitutional conventions affirmed in landmark Supreme Court judgments, the assembly floor was the sole venue to determine legislative majority. By colluding to prevent a session, the executive and the Speaker were subverting democratic accountability, paralyzing public administration, and exposing the state to governance chaos.
The DMK leader called upon constitutional authorities to protect the dignity of the legislative institution. He asserted that the opposition would utilize every legal and democratic avenue to prevent the subversion of parliamentary democracy in Tamil Nadu.
