DMK working president M.K. Stalin denounced the ruling AIADMK dispensation on August 26, 2017, for weaponizing the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Privileges Committee against opposition lawmakers. Stalin pointed out that the committee was hastily convened with the ulterior motive of disqualifying several DMK legislators on frivolous grounds. He stated that this desperate political maneuver was orchestrated solely to artificially reduce the total strength of the assembly and manufacture a synthetic majority for Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami minority government.
Stalin emphasized that nineteen ruling party legislators had already submitted formal letters expressing complete lack of confidence in the Chief Minister, rendering the cabinet constitutionally illegitimate. Instead of facing an immediate floor test as mandated by established parliamentary norms, the ruling establishment sought to misuse legislative mechanisms to purge opposition members. Such brazen subversion of democratic conventions exposed the moral bankruptcy of an administration terrified of legislative scrutiny.
The DMK leader declared that the party would resolutely resist unconstitutional harassment through legal challenges in the High Court and mass democratic protests. He warned that authoritarian maneuvers would accelerate the complete collapse of the regime.
