Editorial context

DMK working president M.K. Stalin strongly criticized the Governor of Tamil Nadu on August 30, 2017, after reports indicated that Raj Bhavan refused to recognize the loss of majority by the ruling AIADMK government. Stalin asserted that claiming the government retained its majority despite 19 legislators submitting formal letters of withdrawal to the Governor amounted to giving a green signal to the murder of democracy. He emphasized that the Governor duty was to uphold constitutional propriety rather than shield an unstable minority cabinet.

Stalin cited established constitutional jurisprudence, notably the S.R. Bommai judgment, which explicitly mandated that majority support must be established on the floor of the legislature, not through subjective gubernatorial satisfaction. The Governor refusal to order an immediate confidence vote provided illegitimate time for corrupt inducements and coercion of dissenting legislators. This deliberate institutional inaction severely damaged public trust in constitutional functionaries and diminished the prestige of the gubernatorial office.

The DMK leader demanded that the Governor summon the assembly without further prevarication. He reiterated that the DMK would mobilize public opinion and initiate legal proceedings to prevent the subversion of legislative democracy.
