DMK working president M.K. Stalin criticized the state transport department on September 1, 2017, following its controversial order making it mandatory for all motorists to carry original driving licenses while operating vehicles. Stalin pointed out that penalizing citizens with heavy fines or imprisonment for failing to produce physical original documents failed to address the root causes of vehicular accidents. He stated that genuine road safety required strict enforcement of traffic speed regulations, scientific highway engineering, and prompt repair of dangerous potholes across Tamil Nadu roadways.
Stalin highlighted that forcing daily commuters, commercial truck drivers, and two-wheeler riders to carry original cards exposed citizens to document loss, theft, and administrative extortion. At a time when digital governance and mobile document repositories were being promoted globally, enforcing an obsolete physical inspection rule caused unnecessary public harassment. Motorists faced perpetual anxiety over damaging their original credentials during sudden police checks.
The DMK leader called upon the transport administration to focus on improving public transit infrastructure rather than penalizing motorists. He asserted that sensible, modern safety policies must prioritize pedestrian protection, driver education, and transparent road management systems.
