DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a passionate public pledge on September 3, 2017, vowing to democratically uproot the Union and state governments whose policies precipitated the suicide of medical aspirant S. Anitha. Stalin stated that Anitha death was not an isolated tragedy but an institutional sacrifice forced upon Tamil Nadu by anti-poor, anti-reservation policies. He declared that the DMK and democratic forces across the state would channel their righteous indignation into a peaceful political movement to safeguard social justice forever.

Stalin noted that the ruling AIADMK government had proved completely helpless and subservient, failing to obtain presidential assent for the state exemption bills passed unanimously by the legislature. At the same time, the Union government had willfully ignored the collective will of Tamil Nadu people. Both dispensations had betrayed the dreams of thousands of aspiring rural doctors, reducing medical education to a commercial commodity reserved only for affluent urban classes.

The DMK leader promised that Anitha memory would remain etched forever in the history of the Dravidian movement. He affirmed that the struggle to protect affirmative action would continue until absolute equality prevailed.
