DMK working president M.K. Stalin made a stirring appeal on September 6, 2017, calling upon all political parties, social organizations, and democratic movements in Tamil Nadu to transcend ideological differences and unite for the preservation of state autonomy. Stalin declared that social justice, the foundational pillar of the Dravidian renaissance, was facing an unprecedented assault from centralized policies formulated by the Union government. He emphasized that defending reservation policies and regional educational rights required absolute solidarity among all progressive forces.
Stalin noted that historical gains achieved through decades of public agitations, from the Justice Party era to Kalaignar Karunanidhi pioneering affirmative action policies, were being systematically dismantled. Centralized entrance examinations and bureaucratic overreach directly threatened the empowerment of backward, most backward, and Dalit communities. Individual party agendas had to be set aside to safeguard the collective welfare and constitutional federal rights of the people of Tamil Nadu.
The DMK leader asserted that Tamil Nadu had consistently shown the path forward whenever democratic rights were imperiled. He pledged that the DMK would spearhead a non-partisan mass mobilization to safeguard social equity.
