DMK working president M.K. Stalin highlighted a grave institutional crisis on September 6, 2017, pointing out that the historic Christian Medical College in Vellore was compelled to halt undergraduate medical admissions due to central NEET mandates. Stalin explained that CMC Vellore had maintained a distinguished century-long tradition of educating doctors committed to serving in remote rural hospitals and underprivileged communities across India. Centralized seat allocation dismantled the institution unique selection criteria aimed at prioritizing dedicated service over commercial capability.
Stalin pointed out that premier institutions were losing their administrative autonomy and social missions under an inflexible, uniform examination system. By suspending 99 of its 100 MBBS seats in protest against centralized interference, CMC Vellore exposed the deep structural flaws of NEET. Instead of fostering educational excellence, centralized mandates were systematically undermining established medical centres that catered extensively to poor and disadvantaged patients.
The DMK leader criticized both central and state governments for indifferent handling of renowned educational institutions. He insisted that entrance policies must respect institutional diversity, regional healthcare requirements, and equitable access for students from humble origins. Stalin affirmed that destroying proven philanthropic medical institutions harmed public welfare.
