DMK working president M.K. Stalin led an opposition delegation to meet Tamil Nadu Governor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao at Raj Bhavan on September 10, 2017. During the meeting, Stalin submitted a formal memorandum demanding an immediate summoning of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly for a decisive confidence vote. He informed the Governor that following the written dissent of nineteen ruling party MLAs, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami had lost his legislative majority and lacked constitutional authority to govern.
Stalin emphasized that democratic established precedent, reiterated in the landmark S.R. Bommai verdict, mandated that the floor of the legislature was the only legitimate forum to test majority support. Allowing a minority administration to linger created severe policy paralysis, administrative corruption, and brazen horse-trading. The leader pointed out that Tamil Nadu was reeling under severe governance stagnation, and prolonged uncertainty harmed public interest and executive discipline.
The DMK leader urged the Governor to discharge his constitutional obligation impartially without succumbing to central political pressures. He reaffirmed that the DMK-led alliance would vigorously uphold parliamentary norms and protect the constitutional dignity of the legislative institution.
