DMK working president M.K. Stalin firmly demanded on September 14, 2017, that the central BJP government immediately abandon all efforts to establish Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya schools in Tamil Nadu. Stalin stated that introducing Navodaya institutions was a covert attempt to impose the three-language formula, directly undermining Tamil Nadu's historic two-language policy of Tamil and English pioneered by Perarignar C.N. Annadurai in 1968. He emphasized that the state's linguistic policy successfully safeguarded the mother tongue while equipping youth with global competence through English.
Stalin pointed out that Navodaya schools enforced Hindi and Sanskrit under the guise of national integration, creating backdoor channels to erode Tamil linguistic identity in regional schooling. Consecutive Tamil Nadu governments, guided by unanimous legislative resolutions, consistently rejected central residential schools that compromised regional language primacy. Attempting to force these schools onto Tamil Nadu through judicial petitions or central pressure displayed utter disregard for regional linguistic sentiments and federal diversity.
The DMK leader urged the state administration to firmly refuse land allocations or departmental clearances for Navodaya centers. He pledged that the DMK would vigorously defend Tamil linguistic rights.
