DMK working president M.K. Stalin issued a sharp condemnation on September 17, 2017, denouncing the central BJP administration for executing astronomical price hikes on petrol and diesel fuels. Stalin charged that the Union government behaved shamelessly as an administration serving private and state oil marketing conglomerates rather than safeguarding ordinary citizens. While international crude oil benchmarks experienced historic declines, Indian consumers were subjected to daily upward tariff revisions, allowing oil monopolies to register record-breaking profits at public expense.
Stalin observed that the astronomical tax burden imposed through non-shareable central excise levies systematically drained middle-class earnings and working-class wages. Commercial vehicle operators, small traders, auto-rickshaw drivers, and agricultural pump users faced unsustainable operating costs. Every price revision contributed directly to spiraling inflation across groceries, vegetables, and basic household items. The central dispensation's persistent refusal to roll back excise duties demonstrated absolute indifference to popular economic hardships.
The DMK leader demanded an immediate reduction in fuel taxes to protect the public from corporate profiteering. He asserted that the DMK would mobilize public campaigns against regressive central taxation policies that exploited everyday consumers.
